In your marriage are you guilty of unhealthy image management? In other words, are you making poor decisions based on how you might be perceived or how you want to be perceived by others?
For example:
· We didn’t want to be unsociable so we started drinking socially and now my spouse is an alcoholic.
· We didn’t want to look like we weren’t prosperous so we bought a house and car we couldn’t afford and now we have major money problems.
Unhealthy image management negatively impacts your H.O.M.E.
H - Health: You open yourself up to stress and stress related illnesses.
O - Outreach: Your Christian witness suffers. Because your focus is totally inward there is no outreach.
M - Money: Trying to impress others is expensive and it depletes your finances.
E - Energy: You’re exhausted from your daily obligations and putting on a performance for others.
When your home is dealing with these kind of issues it becomes very difficult to build a great marriage.
Here is the nugget: You don’t want to spend more time managing your image as a couple than you do building your relationship as a couple. Love your spouse more than you love the image you want to portray as a couple. Invest in a Godly marriage and the image will take care of itself.
