Throwing your Spouse Under the Bus

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Definition: Distancing or disassociating yourself from someone based on fear of rejection, ridicule, or harm.

Where did this practice originate? In Genesis 3:11,12 We find a conversation between God and Adam:

“Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.”

With the first two words out of his mouth, Adam said, “The WOMAN!” and threw Eve right under the bus!

Unfortunately, there are many other biblical examples of this practice. Abram threw Sarai under the bus. Rebekah threw Isaac under the bus. And the list goes on.

When Joseph found out Mary was pregnant and it wasn’t his, his intention was to quietly deal with it and not publicly disgrace her. Here is the nugget for you: When you have an issue with your spouse don’t intentionally put it on public display.

Remember, the definition of throwing under the bus has to do with fear. But the angel of the Lord that spoke to Joseph is speaking the same thing to you, “Fear not”.

Do you believe that God has something special planned for your marriage?  If so, then trust Him!  Trust that God will get you through any difficulty that you are facing in your marriage. Trust Him instead of throwing your spouse under the bus.
